Yet Another Addict

So lately I've found myself addicted to the Food Network. I blame it on my recent re-addiction to food and cooking, but i also blame it on the fact that all their programming is a meal, so to speak.

And I'm serious, too. Look at any of their competition shows.  Are any of them season long competitions, like Survivor or Amazing Race? No! Each competition is contained within that (usually) hour-long episode. Each episode is its own meal, each with its own flavor and tastes; you're not forced to "eat" the same drivel week after week. You're not following the drama or any of that other BS that gets so repetitive and just plain DULL on shows like Survivor.
Now is there drama? Delicious, hateful drama? Of course there is! You always have that over-confident douche, and the one chef who does what they do because they love it and don't care -although the money would be nice. Okay, you might now have them in every episode, but you get enough drama sprinkled throughout the season that I am hooked on every last cooking competition on that damnned network.

Canned? You betcha!
Ultimate Recipe Showdown? Bring it on!
Dinner: Impossible? Awesome!
Iron Chef? Eh... A little repetitive, but still wonderful to watch!

And the format for each of them is absolutely beautiful. In Chopped, you have three round of cooking, starting with four chefs. Each round they're given four ingredients they must use, and each round is one course (appetizer, entrée, and dessert). Each round, one chef is eliminated ("chopped") until you have the best chef standing. Brilliant.
In URS, you've got two rounds for original recipes and whichever recipe gets the highest score out of both rounds wins. Delicious.
In D:I, the host (usually Robert Irvine) is given eight hours to come up with a menu based on the crazy terms of the mission, which changes from show to show. In one episode he had to create a menu based on Charlie Daniel's "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" lyrics, and in another, he had to base his menu on hot air ballooning, while the challenges came in randomly as five balloons carrying the challenges landed. It's probably the most stressful show I've watched, because it always comes right down to the end of the clock.
And need I really explain Iron Chef? You've got a secret ingredient you must incorporate into all of your dishes as you take on the "iron chef" champion. Just plain exciting.

And let's not forget the rest of their programming! I won't bother to list the rest of them here, but does anybody here watch Ace of Cakes?? Those things are beautiful, and I love watching the creation process.

And So It Begins

I finally was able to watch the fantastic movie that is Julie & Julia over the past weekend.
And I was inspired.

To quote the Julia Child we have all come to know, "I was 32 when I started cooking; up until then, I just ate." And although I'm not 32, and have been cooking much of my life, I certainly do love to eat. In fact, much like Julia, my love of eating is why I began cooking.

Now, I have a confession to make; I have actually never cooked from her infamous cookbook, Mastering the Art of French Cooking. So it's a little sad to say that my initial love for the art was never inspired by her, but like I said, watching Julie Powell's struggles to complete 524 recipes in 365 days and Julia Child become inspired by France and it's cooking has inspired me.

Now, to start right out, I am NOT going to take on Julie Powell's challenge. I definitely want to try and take on Mrs. Child's hefty cookbook, but I'd feel like I was copying her if I did. ...Not to mention the fact that if I tried, I know I'd fail because I'm lazy. >.>;;

But on to the point! This is MY blog, so it will be little bit of this, and a little bit of that. I'm lazy and inconsistent, but I will try to post at least once a week. Or at least twice a month. We'll see how that goes. :) As  you might tell, though, I'm going to go for a little cooking slant with my blog. I don't know how often, but I am going to intersperse my posts with my forays into the cooking world. I've got a little experience under my belt, but I'm finally reaching out to diversify my tastes --and I'm takin' y'all along for the ride!
